Personality

Cockapoos are sociable, playful, and affectionate - they tend to inherit the best of both parent breeds. They're generally good with children and other pets, adaptable to flat or house living, and keen to be wherever their people are.

The variation within the breed is wider than in pedigrees - because of the mix of parentage, two litter-mates can differ significantly in temperament, size, and coat type.

Exercise

One to one-and-a-half hours of daily exercise is typical for an adult Cockapoo, though this varies by the dog's size and energy level. They enjoy a mix of on-lead walks and off-lead time.

Weight and Feeding

Weight varies considerably depending on whether the Poodle parent was a Toy, Miniature, or Standard: 5–11 kg is the typical range. Track weight monthly - both parent breeds can be prone to weight gain.

Health

As a mixed breed, Cockapoos may be less susceptible to some breed-specific conditions - but they can still inherit health issues from either parent line.

Ear problems - inherited from the Cocker side; check and clean ears regularly. Track Ear Infections →

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) - present in both parent breeds; responsible breeders test for it. Track Progressive Retinal Atrophy →

Hip dysplasia - worth asking about in the parents' health history. Track Hip Dysplasia →

Skin issues - some Cockapoos inherit sensitive skin from either parent. Track Skin Allergies →

Patellar luxation - the kneecap slipping out of place; more common in smaller Cockapoos. Track Luxating Patella →

Grooming

Cockapoo coats vary from wavy to tightly curled and are generally low-shedding. The trade-off: they need regular professional grooming (every 6–8 weeks) and brushing at home to prevent matting. Neglected Cockapoo coats mat quickly and painfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cockapoos hypoallergenic? No dog is truly hypoallergenic, but Cockapoos tend to shed less than many breeds, which some allergy sufferers find more manageable. This isn't guaranteed - individual dogs vary, and reactions depend on dander and saliva as much as fur.

How big will my Cockapoo get? Depends on the Poodle parent. Toy Poodle cross: typically 5–7 kg. Miniature Poodle cross: 7–11 kg. Ask the breeder about parent sizes for the best indication.

How long do Cockapoos live? 13–16 years is typical - the hybrid tends to be healthy and long-lived.

Are Cockapoos easy to train? Generally yes. Both parent breeds are highly trainable and intelligent. Cockapoos tend to be responsive and motivated by praise and treats.

Do Cockapoos suffer separation anxiety? They're very people-oriented and can struggle with being alone. Training for alone time should start early.
